Juror’s Statement, October 1, 2013

Art is a blend of process and product. The process is often a solitary endeavor, and the product has a life of its own. It is difficult for an artist to evaluate his/her own work because what happens during the process influences an artist’s perception of the outcome. Judging a show has its challenges as well. No two reviewers will respond in exactly the same way, and there is an inescapable, human, subjective element involved in the evaluations, but you can be assured that each entry was given serious consideration.
I am interested in work that attracts me from afar and offers something different up close, so I studied each image from varying distances. Composition, originality, contrast, mood, and dominance/unity were all considerations, as well as the use of color, value, edge, and shape.
The top award went to Alessandra Ricci for Ragazza, an oil on canvas. I chose it for its design and technique, a mix of bold and subtle. The use of gold foil in the piece was interesting, and the artist used an attractive variety of edges in both foil and paint. The foil was an enhancement, not a distraction, and it provided a reflective quality that shifted as the lighting changed or as the viewer moved...
